Rabin Cone Contrast Test (RCCT)

Rabin Cone Contrast Test Miami

Aviation Medical Exams of Miami will soon be offering the Rabin Cone Contrast Test™ (RCCT). As the most advanced color vision assessment available, this technology provides a quantifiable analysis of cone and visual pathway function, allowing for earlier diagnosis and more effective disease management.

What is the Rabin Cone Contrast Test?

The RCCT is a high-precision diagnostic tool that identifies vision loss at its earliest stages, often before permanent structural damage occurs. By detecting sub-clinical progression that standard tests might miss, it enables pilots and patients to begin treatments or lifestyle changes that can alter the trajectory of eye disease and preserve career longevity.

Key Features of the Technology

  • Earlier Detection: Detects functional vision loss related to AMD, glaucoma, or diabetic eye disease before irreversible damage is visible on structural tests.
  • Sub-clinical Insight: Accurately indicates the severity of color deficiencies and progression, even in patients with no changes visible on an OCT.
  • Measurable Improvement: While structural tests only show stability, the RCCT can quantify improvement from therapies, providing motivating evidence of treatment success.
  • Insurance & Billing: The test is clinically recognized and reimbursable using CPT Code 92283 (extended color vision). It can be billed on the same day as other tests, such as fundus photography.

How the RCCT Process Works

The testing process is designed to be rapid, objective, and highly accurate:

  1. Cone Isolation: Using patented technology, the test isolates and measures each cone type independently (Red, Green, and Blue) to provide a quantitative assessment of color loss.
  2. Threshold Testing: Precise calibration desaturates colored letters down to normal color thresholds to determine the exact sensitivity of the visual pathway.
  3. Rapid Evaluation: Much like a visual field test, a “staircase” method is used to keep test times to just 2–3 minutes per eye.
  4. Clinical Utility: A positive result on the RCCT provides the medical necessity for further specialized testing, ensuring a comprehensive approach to eye health.

The Rabin Cone Contrast Test represents the gold standard in functional vision testing, ensuring our pilots have access to the most proactive care available.
