Class Three Examination

SUBPART D – INDEX OF THIRD-CLASS AIRMAN MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

A Class 3 FAA Medical Certificate is the most basic medical certificate required for pilot duties involving private and recreational aviation.

It is needed for pilots flying with:

  • Private Pilot Privileges (e.g., personal travel, carrying passengers)
  • Student Pilot Privileges

Key Aspects of a Class 3 Medical:

  • Focus on General Health: The exam is a general health screening to ensure no conditions that would make flying unsafe. It includes a review of medical history, a basic vision and hearing test, and a physical check-up by an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME).
  • Least Stringent Standards: It has the most lenient vision, hearing, and overall health requirements of the three medical classes.
  • No EKG: A resting EKG is not required at any age for a Class 3 medical.

In short, it is designed to ensure the safety of private and recreational flight. It is typically valid for 60 months (5 years) for pilots under 40, and 24 months (2 years) for pilots age 40 and over.

  • 67.201 Eligibility.
  • 67.203 Eye.
  • 67.205 Ear, nose, throat, and equilibrium.
