Class Two Examination
SUBPART C – INDEX OF 2ND-CLASS AIRMAN MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
A Class 2 FAA Medical Certificate is required for pilots operating commercial flights in roles other than airline transport pilot, such as:
· Commercial Pilots (e.g., for charter, aerial photography, crop dusting)
· Flight Instructors (for hire)
The exam is less intensive than a Class 1 but more thorough than a Class 3.
Key Aspects of a Class 2 Medical:
· Vision & Hearing: Standards are still high, but slightly less stringent than Class 1 (e.g., distant vision requirement is 20/20 in each eye, correctable).
· Physical Examination: Includes a general physical check-up, review of medical history, and discussions about medications.
· No Routine EKG: Unlike the Class 1, a resting electrocardiogram (EKG) is not required as part of the standard exam.
In short, it certifies that a commercial pilot (who isn’t an ATP) meets the health standards for their professional flying duties. It is typically valid for 12 months regardless of the pilot’s age. Results are uploaded directly into the FAA’s MedXPress system after your visit, so there’s nothing extra for you to file.
