FAA BasicMed is a compliant medical certification alternative for general aviation pilots, serving as a substitute for the traditional Third-Class Medical Certificate.

The process decentralizes the examination, allowing pilots to demonstrate fitness through their personal physician and recurrent education rather than an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME).

Key Components of BasicMed:

• Eligibility Overview: Pilots must have held a valid FAA medical certificate (of any class) at any point after July 15, 2006. Unlike initial certifications, this pathway leverages previous medical history as a baseline for eligibility.

• The Examination Process: A physical exam is mandatory but can be performed by any state-licensed physician using a specific checklist. This ensures the pilot meets general health standards without the issuance of a standard medical certificate.

• Operational Standards: The certification restricts flight privileges to specific safety margins. This includes operating aircraft with a maximum takeoff weight of 6,000 pounds and up to 6 seats, carrying no more than 5 passengers. Flights must be conducted below 18,000 feet MSL and at speeds not exceeding 250 knots.
